Evergreen Ensemble closes Season 4 with Sarah Kirkland Snider’s Mass for the Endangered, a moving contemporary work that turns the traditional form of the Mass toward the vulnerable creatures and threatened habitats of the living earth.

Written for choir and ensemble, Mass for the Endangered is both prayer and plea. It gives voice to grief over what is fragile and disappearing, while also inviting wonder, attention, and care. The work asks us to listen more closely to the world we share and to consider our responsibility toward the life that surrounds us.

As the final program in Evergreen Ensemble’s Season 4 arc, Mass for the Endangered gathers together the season’s themes of journey, incarnation, and care for creation. If pilgrimage teaches us to walk the earth with attention, and Christmas reminds us that heaven comes to meet us here, this spring program asks how we are called to cherish and protect the living world along the way.
